CHARACTER NAME: Shion
SERIES: No. 6
CANON POINT: Vol. 9, Chapter 4 end
AGE: 16
APPEARANCE: White hair, purple eyes, snaking red scar. Just your average teenager, right?
PREVIOUS GAME HISTORY: N/A
PERSONALITY:
Shion is not someone easy to sum up in a nutshell and at the same time he is. In short, his most defining characteristics are his kindness and idealism. Shion is one of those hopeful sorts, assuming the best, trusting those better handled with caution, accepting of things told to him without question. He's led a privileged life, particularly before being relocated to Lost Town after his first meeting with Nezumi, but even then, he's still got food, shelter, an education and such things. And while he's grateful for those things, he's never really considered what it's like to not have them or that there are those that don't. It's a world he doesn't know. But because he's led such a life, Shion is not cynical or jaded like many would be. He is still capable of optimism and would help another selflessly or even at the detriment of himself. Because Shion is so willing to help others and see the best in things, he's generally a pretty friendly guy.
On top of being an optimist, Shion is also highly sentimental. He's an emotional creature and sees no weakness in having feelings or in displaying them. Having attachments to people is something he holds dear and he has trouble understanding how anyone could cut themselves off from all others. Shion also has a habit of being open with those feelings and voicing them in clumsy, but honest ways. It may be embarrassing to all parties involved, but he means every word in earnest.
In all these ways, Shion is very much against the norm of his peers in the No. 6 society. And he has no problem with standing out or being thought of as weird for those reasons. He's spent most of his life quietly fitting in, but always questioning it to himself and thus never quite fitting the bill entirely. He has thoughts of how things aren't quite right, that the system is broken, or perhaps needs to be broken. He doesn't do what is expected of him if it goes against his ideals once he's been fired up. Once that spark is lit in the young man, Shion can be very stubborn, infuriatingly so for anyone not used to his idealistic tendencies. He will argue against logic and practicality in the face of a hope that can be worked toward. It doesn't matter how much of a stretch it is, if the chance is there, he'll stand firm by his belief in hope and compromise. There is always a third option. He also doesn't tend to let things drop if you let him keep talking and shutting him up may take some practice. That stubbornness can also lead to recklessness and Shion will take risks he probably shouldn't if he feels there is a need.
That recklessness can be partially contributed also to his lack of street smarts and common sense. Shion is a very smart young man, with a strong aptitude for sciences and a high IQ. He's also naturally curious and always seeking to know more. But despite his intelligence, Shion is also at the same time an airhead and very naive. Because there is so much he's never experienced himself before, Shion just doesn't have a lot to draw on in terms of knowledge of the world and how it really works outside of the relative cushiness of his own life or what can be learned from a classroom or textbooks. He tends to act and speak without thinking through what he's doing, like blurting things out or running out into danger, always with good intentions. ... Well, almost always.
There are times when pushed, that Shion takes on a darker side, almost outside of himself. His temper is triggered and he acts violently and lashes out against whoever pissed him off. Generally this is only ever triggered when someone hurts or makes a slight against Nezumi, showing just how deeply Shion is influenced by and is attached to the other man. Someone can insult him all day long and he will bear it, but if they imply Nezumi can be a whore, they get jumped and choked until he's dragged off of them... This side of him even leads Shion to coldly take a life when the threat had already been neutralized in extreme circumstances because the man had injured and nearly killed Nezumi. But after such an episode, when he is snapped out of it, he returns to his usual self and will feel guilt for his actions. This is quite possibly how his mind has chosen to cope with his feelings that something is wrong with the way the world works and it is triggered when those most important to him are wronged or threatened, releasing pent up anger that even Shion doesn't realize he has. This very rarely happens though.
This fiercely protective streak directed toward Nezumi just shows how strong of an impression the boy left upon their first meeting. Shion was instantly drawn to him and ever since has caught himself wondering about the other young man, how he is, what he's doing, if he's safe, if he's alone. Nezumi is very much the catalyst that drives Shion forward. Shion admires Nezumi's strength and passion and wishes desperately to understand the enigmatic teen, so different from himself and yet he feels they are tied together. I think Nezumi's strong will to live and survive also inspires the same in Shion. Despite his recklessness and idealist tendencies, Shion is not someone who will throw away his life, he will fight to survive.
By the point in the canon that Shion has been pulled, he has begun to learn more about the ugly truths of the world, of the society he grew up in, he’s been tainted in his eyes by taking a life, no matter how necessary it was. He worries about how honest he really is with others and himself. If he just makes excuses to cover his own weaknesses, while having trouble acknowledging the incredible inner strength he has shown to get where he is at present. So some of his kindness and honesty is coming into question in his own eyes, but they are still very much a part of who Shion is as is evidenced by his actions even after surviving and witnessing horrors within the Correctional Facility.
ABILITIES:
Shion has no special or extraordinary abilities save his aptitude for airheadedness or maybe his nigh unshakable idealism, even in a city that should have jaded even the most optimistic of folks. And perhaps his mind. When tested at a young age, it was determined that Shion had great potential and many had high expectations of the boy as he got older and continued to excel at academics, labeled as an elite from toddlerhood. However those expectations suddenly vanished when he and his mother were relocated to Lost Town. Shion still strives to learn all he can however, absorbing all sorts of knowledge when it is presented to him much like an eager sponge. He's book smart, he's just lacking a bit in common sense.
He has also shown to have an inner strength that may surprise others when push comes to shove, but it isn’t something beyond the scope of human nature. He adapts to situations fairly quickly as well for someone from such a privileged life previously, but it isn’t without effort and determination and work on his part.
POSSESSIONS: Shion would have arrived in dirty and worn clothing that he took into the Correctional Facility, probably a button up shirt and some slacks (his sweater was sacrificed to make makeshift tie off bandages). Bloodied and possibly cut/torn in a few places, definitely with a bullet graze hole on the leg. He also was in possession of a microfiber rope and a microchip with protected research data on it he received from a founder/researcher of No. 6 with information on No. 6, the forest people Nezumi descended from, and Elyurias. He probably is also carrying Nezumi’s gloves somewhere on his person.

JOURNAL ENTRY SAMPLE:
[The face that flickers into view over the broadcast is one that looks weary. Beyond weary in fact. Like he’s been to hell and back and honestly, it’d be the truth to put it just that way. And no matter that he wasn’t where he should be, one thing hadn’t changed from there to here. The fight wasn’t over. So there is a light in violet eyes, unmistakable and determined.]
Excuse me, I know that a lot of people arrived in the same boat as me. Or rather on the same train, apparently, but… if anyone could direct me to a hospital. A clinic. Anywhere that may have medical supplies? It isn’t… urgent. But… [And his voice trails off, not sure how much to share. Suddenly wary. Torn between needing to rely on the strangers of this place and in having learned a lesson to not do so so easily.]
I’m sure plenty of people would want to know where such resources are given our situation, right? And if there really is no way… back immediately? My companion and I could use some supplies. Anything would help.
Any information at all would help even.
So… please. [And the boy’s snowy head dips to the feed in supplication.] And thank you.
[He lifts those intense eyes to the broadcast once more, imparting his need and plea and genuine gratitude in advance before he turns it off to wait for an answer. He just hoped there was one. Nezumi was saved, he’d survive, but… it wasn’t like he was in the best of shape. Nor was Shion himself… It would be better to be prepared.]
